Dentists are always saying to brush your teeth, but what does that actually mean? After every meal? Just before bed? Flossing too? Here at Crossroads Family Dentistry in Colorado Springs we know you’re busy, so here’s how to keep your teeth sparkling white for that surprise selfie no matter what time of the day it is.
When?
While brushing after every meal certainly isn’t a bad idea, the most important times are once in the morning and once at night. Don’t brush right after breakfast, especially if you’ve had something acidic like citrus. The acid can weaken the enamel of your teeth, so it is best to wait at least an hour.
How Long?
The official American Dental Association recommendation is to brush your teeth for at least two minutes each time that you brush. If it helps, try setting a timer on your phone or listening to a song or part of a podcast while brushing. The time will be up before you know it and by brushing for longer, you’ll have removed up to 26% more plaque!
Am I Brushing Too Much?
Believe it or not there actually is such a thing as brushing too much, or at least too hard. Use a light touch when brushing to avoid eroding the enamel and try to wait if brushing after a meal. If you think you might be brushing too hard, just check your brush! If the bristles look flat, then try easing up a little.
